Manufacture
The lemon slices were sculpted out of modelling clay. Every little detail from flesh to skin was replicated.
Brass rods were cut, shaped and silver soldered together to create the cage which was then chrome-plated.
The base was machine lathed from laminated acrylic.
Finished Results / Interesting Notes
The cage was originally designed copying existing fans on the market. But after initial mock-ups were created, it was found that the eye was drawn more to the cage than the lemons. This resulted in every other ring being dropped from the framework resulting a more sparsely ringed cage, which allowed the eye to focus more on the lemons than on the metalwork.
The process of hand painting the semi translucent resins into the lemon mould created a model which had all the same light transmitting qualities of a real lemon. When the light was shone from behind, the lemon illuminated.
